Simpson Housing Services began as an emergency overnight shelter in the basement of Simpson United Methodist Church in 1982. Simpson has since become a leading nonprofit providing assistance to people experiencing homelessness. In response to un-met community needs, our programs have grown to include emergency shelter, single adult supportive housing, and family supportive housing. We work across the metro area, partnering with landlords and developers to find affordable housing for all families and individuals. At any given time, we provide supportive services to 100 individuals and 200 families with over 400 children.

How Can You Contribute?

The Red Lake Navigation Center (temporary shelter space) provides a warm, supervised, welcoming, and affirming environment for single adult men or women as identified by collaborating partners from the Hiawatha encampment. This position involves providing hospitality to shelter residents and meeting their immediate needs in terms of sleeping space and basic daily needs.

This position works on-site at the Red Lake Navigation Center. The shelter space at the Navigation Center can serve up to 120 single adults. The Navigation Center will be open 24 hours a day from approximately December 2018 to May 2019. Employee may be asked to provide back up for other advocates during periods of absence or during times of increased workloads.

We are looking to fill multiple temporary part-time positions.

Schedules

1st, 2nd and 3rd shifts available. 

1st shift schedule
6:30am-2:30pm, 6:45am-2:45pm, 7:00am-3:00pm, 7:15am-3:15pm, 7:30am-3:30pm

2nd shift schedule
3:00pm-11:00pm, 3:15pm-11:15pm, 3:30pm-11:30pm, 3:45pm-11:45pm, 4:00pm-12:00am

3rd shift schedule
11:00pm-7:00am, 11:15pm-7:15am, 11:30pm-7:30am, 11:45am-7:45am, 12:00am-8:00am

Part-time weekdays; Part-time weekends; On-call and flexible positions are available.

Location: 2105-2109 Cedar Ave. S, Minneapolis, MN
3 new heated tents with 40 beds will be put on the site in late November to house guests from the encampment. 

Responsibilities

Facilitate positive on-site shelter operations:

  • Provide a welcoming environment for guests.
  • Be able to deescalate and empathize with shelter guests, while creating a safe environment.
  • Know, communicate, and execute shelter procedures. 
  • Coordinate paperwork, greet and screen guests at the shelter.
  • Sort and distribute donated and purchased supplies including bedding and other items.
  • Communicate in both written and verbal form about daily concerns or incidents.
  • Be available for questions and provide information to shelter guests. 
  • Complete specific daily duties of shelter.
  • Overnight shifts require staff to be awake throughout the night.

Provide quality coordination of services:

  • Communicate and coordinate services with all team members. 
  • Be on-time for scheduled shifts and required meetings.
  • Ability to assist and support guests with crisis and conflict management issues.
  • Communicate regularly with Supervisor.
  • Be knowledgeable about harm reduction, homelessness and the shelter system.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Complete accurate and thorough documentation and record-keeping in a timely manner:

  • Log clear and concise case notes of daily events.
  • Maintain accurate records including employee time sheets.
  • Collect and manage client information as needed.

Provide positive representation of SHS through public relations and networking:

  • Interpret and promote the program to community members.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with staff and community partners.
  • Professional behavior, dress, and conduct are expected in all aspects of work with guests as well as contact with the community.

Demonstrate essential knowledge, abilities and skills:

  • Ability to work very well independently, with excellent skills in teamwork and collaboration.
  • Ability to be flexible and manage time.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with participants, providers and others.
  • Ability to work with individuals from very diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to perform non-traditional tasks while meeting participant needs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Adhere to a professional boundaries in interactions with guests, volunteers, staff and public.

Scope of Position

Job Requirements:

  • Patience, flexibility, ability to listen, assertiveness and compassion.
  • Ability to be decisive and effective under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain composure in crisis situations.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Reliable transportation to and from shifts (no transportation of guests is required).

Desired:

  • Knowledge or experience with low-income and homeless populations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of mental health, chemical health, and trauma-informed care is desired.
  • Experience in providing direct social services desired.

Well-qualified applicants will have experience working with homeless individuals, confidence managing conflict in congregate living settings, knowledge of harm reduction practices and philosophies, and cultural competency or flexibility with individuals experiencing personal and historical trauma.

Essential Mental Functions

The employee, in collaboration with the participant, must determine the needs of the participants and how best to meet these needs.  

To provide adequate assistance to participants, the employee must draw on the ability to empathize, problem solve, and the ability to accept people unconditionally with an openness to new ideas.

The employee must understand and apply knowledge of homelessness and social support systems in terms of providing services to participants in crisis.

Essential Physical Functions

The employee must be able to hear and speak, in order to communicate with staff and participants in person, on the telephone and in writing.  Employee must be able to move about the shelter locations.  Employee must be able to lift up to 40lbs on an occasional basis.

Percentage time spent away from main office/location:
Time inside: 95%, Time outside: 5%, Agency travel time required: 0%

Percentage time spent in direct care service: 95%

Type of guidance and supervision received: Will participate in supervision meetings as needed
